Description
Giuseppe Castiglione, Chinese name Lang Shih-ning, was an Italian Jesuit, who is perhaps better known as an artist and an architectural designer than as a missionary. He came to China in 1715 to proselytize, but was summoned to the Imperial Painting Academy in the Inner Court, where he served three emperors. Castiglione originally painted with a primarily European flavor, but as this did not meet with imperial favor, he created a hybrid style that incorporated both Eastern and Western techniques. He excelled at painting from life, and is noted for his renditions of figures, flowers, and birds, and especially for his paintings of horses. He had many followers, and is popular to this day.
