Description
Joy at the New Year Yao Wen-han (fl. 1736-1795) Qing Dynasty Yao Wen-han was a court painter during the Qien-lung era (1736-1795), though neither his dates nor his place of origin are recorded. He was a painter of Buddhist and Taoist figures, and both his ink and color paintings were of a high standard, often employing Western techniques. Here, the whole family has gathered together to celebrate the joyous season of the New Year. The children play in the courtyard with dolls, firecrackers, and instruments, while the elders sit in the hall at a table. Off to the right, foods are being prepared and in the back, decorations are being put up. The perspective arrangement of the architecture and the use of shading reflects the influence of Western techniques.
