Lang Shining is the Chinese name of Giuseppe Castiglione, an Italian who became a Jesuit novitiate at the age of 19, studying painting and architecture as well. He arrived in China at the age of 27 to do missionary work but was summoned to the imperial court, where he served the Kangxi, Yongzheng, and Qianlong Emperors as a painter. He was skilled at depicting figures and especially dogs, horses, and bird-andflower subjects. This leaf, from "Album of Immortal Blossoms in an Everlasting Spring," depicts a single lily stalk in full bloom extending into the composition from the lower right corner. Entwined around the stalk is a tender winding peony with another stalk of flowers behind it. The two different main blossoms of gorgeous red and pure white intersect to create a dramatic contrast. Although done on silk, Castiglione was still able to express the subject using Western methods of shading, giving these blossoms of splendid color a volumetric effect. Differing greatly from the traditional Chinese method of outlines filled with color, it can be considered in a style of its own.
