Description

Qiu Ying (style name Shifu, sobriquet Shizhou) was a native of Taicang, Jiangsu. Originally a lacquer artisan, he later learned from Zhou Chen and excelled at landscape, figure, bird-and-flower, and ruled-line subjects. Gifted at academic methods, his refined beauty also reveals the warm charm of literati art. He was one of the Four Ming Masters. In this painting, white clouds meander in the distant landscape with a pavilion towering in the celestial mountains. Inside the pavilion, court ladies are talking, moving around, singing or dancing. The streams flow out of the valley and merge into a river, beside which the pine trees thrive. The whole picture is beautiful and tranquil, where the rocks and mountains seem to be carved with the hatchet, and the buildings are meticulously detailed. Overall, the picture perfectly embodies the imperial-court decorative painting.
